period
in

Earth's

years

it

this
time,
the
Earth's
climate
was
much
colder
than
it
is
now,
and
the
world
was
a
vastly
different

Age,

ice
sheets
covered
the

These
glaciers
were
thousands
of
feet
thick
and
hundreds
of
miles
long.
They
carved

behind

amounts
of
sediment
and
debris. The
climate
during
the
Ice
Age
was
also
much
drier
than
it
is
today.
The
oceans
were
lower
because
so
much
water
was
locked
up
in
the
glaciers,
and
the
air
was
much
colder
and
drier
because
the
ice
reflected
sunlight
away
from
the
Earth's
surface. Despite
the
harsh
conditions
of
the
Ice
Age,
life
still
persisted.
Huge
mammals
such
as
woolly
mammoths,
saber-toothed
tigers,
and
giant
sloths
roamed
the
land.
Humans
also
lived
during
this
time,
and
they
adapted
to
the
cold
and
harsh
conditions
by
wearing
animal
skins
and
building
shelters. The
end
of
the
Ice
Age
was
marked
by
a
gradual
warming
of
the
climate,
which
caused
the
glaciers
to
retreat.
As
the
ice
melted,
sea
levels
rose,
and
the
climate
became
more
benign.
The
Earth
today
is
vastly
different
from
what
it
was
during
the
Ice
Age,
but
the
legacy
of
that
time
still
remains
in
the
form
of
mountains,
valleys,
and
glaciers
that
were
shaped
by
the
forces
of
nature.
